Learn the dos and don’ts of contacting influential people in local, county, state, and federal government to make a difference for children in the early care and education profession whose decisions impact your business.

In this class, the participant will learn:

  • Act as a citizen in the neighborhood and the early childhood community.

  • Display professionalism in practice.

  • Identify and describe the distinct roles of leaders at the local/county/state/federal levels.

  • The basics of the legislative process.

  • Understand the difference between lobbying and advocacy.

  • Effective forms of advocacy as a leader in the childcare industry.

  • How to convene a legislative forum.

  • The basics of deliberative dialogue.

  • Link with the community resources and with the community.

  • Staff, families and schools share important information to support the well-being of children and youth.

  • Everyone works toward making a decision about how he or she acts on the problem or what policy he or she thinks is best for the area/industry/community/state.

  • Listen carefully to others, especially when their ideas differ from your own.

  • Be open to changing your mind, as this will help you really listen to the views of others.

  • Speak your mind freely, but don’t monopolize the conversation.
